Photojournale : Photo documentary and photo journal stories from around the world

Jonas Hastings

Jonas was born in Sweden 1963.

He obtained his first “real” camera at the age of 13.
In the beginning he was most interested in landscape photographing, but found out later on that people and daily life situations was more his cup of tea.

He began his first job when he was 17 years old, as a news paper photographer at a local paper.

Jonas moved to Gothenburg, Sweden in 1982 and joined a Culture Magazine as photographer/writing journalist.

At the same time he was freelancing for domestic and international newspapers, magazines and agencies as photographer/correspondent.

He went to study at a Photographic school in Sweden between 1985 and 1986.

In 1987 he left his photojournalistic career for a job as commercial/advertising photographer, he was still carrying his 35mm camera around the world on spare time though.

Combined with the studio job he began working as a video photographer, in the beginning mostly with documentary works, later on also with news. His video footage has been aired by international news broadcasters such as ABC, BBC, ITV and CNN around the world.

In 1995 he placed his still equipment on the shelf to work full time with news and documentaries for film and television.

In the year of 2000 it was time to pick up the old still cameras again.
“To carrying around big and heavy video equipment started to be uncreative, it was very hard to get close to people with a huge broadcast camera compared with what you could do with a small Leica camera”

Jonas is since 2003 living and working in Cambodia, with international newspapers as well as agencies and assignment photographing, this side by side with his work at a Cambodian broadcast company. Indochina is currently his working field, but his base is still in Stockholm, Sweden.
